I Agree!

I Agree!

Agree:

1.) to have the same views, emotions, etc.; harmonize in opinion or feeling

2) to live in concord or without contention; get along together

3) to come to one opinion or mind; come to an arrangement or understanding; arrive at a settlement

4) to be consistent; harmonize

How many decisions do you make in a day?  How many thoughts flash through your mind in a single 24-hour period?  A lot.  Did you know that every thought in your mind has only a few possible origins?  Because your mind is truly a marvel – a wonderful creation – entrusted to you by God, many of your thoughts originate in your own mind from the input you receive in your life experience.  However, more than you realize, there are thoughts in your mind that also come from God … and from your enemy, Satan.  God is constantly speaking to you because He loves you.  He wants you to know Him – His heart, His motives, His blessings, His nature.  When He speaks, He is loving, encouraging and filling.  When Satan speaks – which he does on a regular basis through his pesky minions – he is condemning, discouraging, threatening, confusing and sickening.  God’s language is life; Satan’s language is death.  God is fluent in love; Satan is fluent in hate.  And you’re getting conflicting messages all day long.

As you go through your day, with thousands of thoughts swimming through your mind and filtering into your heart, you make choices.  You decide what to wear, what to eat, which is the fastest route to your destination, whom to call, whom to text and whom to avoid.  But there are some deeper decisions being made, too.  Unfortunately, we sometimes make those decisions on autopilot without actually assessing the information.  For instance, you may have a little dialogue going on in your head like this:

Voice #1: “I feel really bad about what I said on the phone yesterday.”

Voice #2:  “Yeah, well, you should.  You’re a terrible friend.”

Voice #1: “She probably hates me now, and I probably deserve it.”

Voice #3: “You were stressed out.  Call her back and apologize.”

Voice #2: “Bad idea.  She wouldn’t understand you anyway.  You’re such a lame excuse for a friend, nevermind a Christian.”

Voice #3: “I have forgiven you.  Ask her to forgive you, too.  Humble yourself and tell her you are sorry.  Then ask her to forgive you.  What she does from there is her decision, but you let Love flow when you go back and admit your fault to your friend.”

… and this is where Voice #1 (you) gets to agree with one of the other voices in the story.  Will you believe Voice #2 (Enemy) who says that you should just forget it because you’re such an awful person?  Or will you believe Voice #3 (God) who covers you with grace and directs you to the pathway of life?

This scenario takes place many, many times a day inside you.  Are you aware of this???  You need to be!  As a follower of Jesus, you hear His voice (John 10:27).  The key is tuning in to His voice.  You have to turn up the volume on the message you want to hear and turn the other stuff down.  The other stuff is still there, but you don’t have to listen!  If you want to hear a song on the radio, you tune the receiver to the number of the radio station.  There are thousands of other songs playing at the very same moment, but you are tuned into the one song you want to hear.  The same goes for the thoughts in your mind.  If you are constantly hearing negative, hurtful, depressing things ringing around in there, then turn that station off!  Choose the station that brings life and peace!  (Spoiler alert: that “station” is God’s voice)

This is where agreement comes in.  I started this conversation with the words, “I Agree,” because you are only as healthy/strong/whole as your agreements dictate.  If you listen to the enemy’s voice all the time, you start to believe him.  You start thinking that you really are a terrible person, that you could never be anyone special, or that you will always be miserable, sick or left out.  If you believe those things, then you agree – you are in accord with, have a harmonious feeling – with what the enemy says.  And then he’s got you where he wants you.  Whatever ideas you agree with, you become.

But, if you agree with what God says – you are His chosen daughter, you are beautiful, you are important, you are treasured, you can make a difference, you possess many gifts and abilities, you are smart, you are creative, you are resourceful, you are capable, you are trustworthy, you are a prize – then you start to actually BE those things.  You align your thoughts and feelings with His thoughts and feelings and all of a sudden, you are filled with life!  You can see things much more clearly, and you are able to step into the fullness of who God intended you to be all along.

Got any old agreements that need to be broken?  Not a problem.  If you have been living as a prisoner because of the agreements you made with the enemy, then today is Emancipation Day for you, my sister.  Ask the Holy Spirit to help you identify any (and each different) agreement you have with the enemy.  When something comes to mind, confess it like this:  “Lord, I have agreed with Satan’s lie that _______________________________.  Right now, I renounce it in Jesus’ name.  I am choosing to agree with You and the truth that_________________________.”  Ask Him to reveal truth to you so you can speak it out and replace the old agreement with the new one.  Identifying the lie + renouncing the lie + replacing it with the truth = Freedom.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (emancipation from bondage, freedom).” Corinthians 3:17 (AMP)

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 (NIV)

“Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery on you.”  Galatians 5:1 (MSG)

Now, I can agree with that!
